Types of Roofing Ventilation used in Kansas – Roofing Options (part 3 of 4)

After covering various types of shingles and open vs. closed valley flashing, this month we continue with our four part series about roofing and the various options you have to choose from roof ventilation. We will focus on options available for those in the Wichita Kansas metro area but the information should apply to most of the home in the Midwest too.

Why is Proper Roof Ventilation Important?

To protect your home, it is important to have a properly vented attic. This can be achieved through a combination of intake venting in the eaves or soffits for new air and exhaust venting gables, deck or ridge vents in order for warm humid air flow to escape. These vents work in conjunction with each other to provide a balanced, constant flow of cool, dry air throughout the attic. This decreases the chance of mold growth and the decay of wood rafters and ceiling joists; which in turns prevents the decking from sagging and ensures the manufacturer warranty is not voided.

Typical Types of Roofing Ventilation

Over the years, we have commonly installed the following ventilation types in our Kansas roofing area (Wichita, KS and the surrounding area including Hutchinson, Newton, McPherson, and Derby):

  • Continuous Ridge Vents – installed at the peak of a sloped roof.ridge vent
  • Turtle Type Vents – round-edged square vents, installed at various areas on the roof. turtle vent
  • Turbine Style Vents – rotating round vents, installed at various areas on the roof. turbine roof vent
  • Power Attic Vents – or fans. power attic vent
  • Soffit/Gable ventilation – a combination of rectangular or square vents on the sides of a house near the peak of the roof and vents installed under the soffit or eave areas. soffit gable vent
